In the Roman Empire legates usually commanded legions. They were appointed by the Emperor.
This legate wears a decorated "muscular" cuirass and the «attical» helmet with ostrich plume. The symbols of his rank are a narrow white waistband with golden tassels, a red tunic and a cloak that is red too.
