The border margravate of Brandenburg arose on the Slavic lands conquered by German feudal lords and was the center of German colonization in the East of Central Europe. On the shield of the knight is the coat of arms of the von Bredows: a red assault ladder with golden (yellow) crossbars in a silver (white) field. The coat of arms symbolizes the ascension of the Bredows family to the highest nobility of Brandenburg.
