Irregular cavalrymen in Polish hussar companies in XVI-XVII centuries were called elears or lisowchyks (by name of their commander Alexander Lisowski). They had no armous and helmets and were distinguished by their suicidal bravery. Elears played a key role in many actions of the 1580 - 1629 period, "opening" the battle with a reckless charge to disorder the enemy before the main attack.
